• Five or six of my plugins have updates, but each fail when trying to update them with a message “could not copy …” and a filename. There was a core update too, and the only way I could install that was to disable all plugins, then run the core update.

    Steps I’ve tried to resolve it:
    Tried disabling all plugins EXCEPT those for updates, but updates still won’t install;
    Disabling ALL plugins, but updates still won’t install;
    Disabling ALL plugins, then enabling just one that needs updating, but update still won’t install.

    Dunno what to try next! 😉

    There’s no visual indication it is, no. I also tried changing the theme, but with the same results 🙁

    do you have a backup if the site before this happened?

    All my backups from the last four or five months show file sizes of 0kb now that I’ve looked at them, so something was obviously amiss a while ago and I hadn’t noticed the empty backups

    When did you notice this error? Did you make any big changes before the error happened?

    I honestly can’t say when it occurred – I noticed a problem last week when WordFence sent an automated email to say I had an out of date plugin and logged in to update it. Didn’t have time to investigate then but had a look today with the steps above which I thought would cure it.
    I did a large rebuild of the site early this year, but not sure if that coincided with this

    Have you tried deleting some plugins?

    No, I have to admit I haven’t tried that! I can’t think what criteria to use to delete them though.
