It sounds like that might be due to a plugin or theme conflict.
Any chance you could try quickly deactivating other plugins and switching to Twenty Fourteen theme to see how it works in that case?

Thanks. This was a special case, didn’t want to update WP core since the owner of the site doesn’t even have FTP access. But luckily we tried the automatic update from within WP and it worked fine, now it’s running 3.8.1 and I no longer have this issue. Thank you though.
