Okay, now I see all links to all tutorials on [link moderated] have been removed by a moderator. Are you going to also remove all the other help I've provided here where I typed out information instead of making a video?

I'll wait to hear an explanation for this. Great way to turn one of your biggest helpers into a not so big helper.

Sorry, that doesn't answer it for me.

I don't even know what the link was...if it was to something that was irrelevant to what the poster asked then I would agree. The answer Matt gave there is far from justification for deleting all the links to my tutorials.

Maybe you should send some of the links you moderated from my posts to Matt and see if he would consider them spam...obviously, you or some mod did based on this opinion of that one post.

@MichaelH so does this mean we can post links to a tutorial on our own sites as a reply that actually applies to the question at hand? The link you provided leads to a user posting a reply link that has nothing to do with the OP question.

What I'm asking is can we get a little more detail? Is it all considered 'reply spam' or just stuff that is serving no purpose. I can see where figaro's posts lately can be considered spam because he is not answering a question he is just randomly posting article links.

@figaro your posts were not answering anyones question, they were just random posts of your links.

If you follow the wp-forum email list, Matt's email address is there.

Please send him this link so he can view the posts:

Bull...point to one that wasn't in direct response to a question or was a direct offer of free, helpful support.

@figaro every single one of them was it's own original post. You were not directly answering a thread created by someone else. What you were doing is considered spam by promoting your website in many posts. From what I understand, to be able to use a link back to your own site you have to be REPLYING to someones question. Not just posting your own thread and assuming it is answering someones question.

kperrone - that topic seems disjointed now as it was moderated (not by me).

There is no compensation, even just links, for answering questions in the Forums.

@figaro every single one of them was it's own original post.

I post a new post to the Miscellaneous forum when I create a new, free, support video. Over the past 9 months or so, I've posted about 30 of them simply to alert people of new, free, support videos. Is that what you are talking about?

I also have 59 pages of replies to people asking for help over about 18 months...you have 6 pages over about 3 years. Are you sure you really need to be lecturing me?

@figaro Lecturing? I'm not. I'm trying to understand what we are allowed to do, if I am wrong feel free to correct me but the attitude is not needed.

Any effort to answer questions in these forums is valued, even if just one answer.

But don't expect compensation, whether it be links or otherwise.

You just went on 5 different topics and posted the same link to your article where you are whining about the forum here. How is that not spamming? Just curious.

    @kperrone
    Generally the answer is no.

Someone pointing to their site to answer a question doesn't seem like a bad thing, and personally, I wouldn't moderate a link posted once or twice. But a constant link barrage to one's own site is a problem--it gets abused quite frequently.

On the other hand, if a question is routinely asked in the Forums, then a proper response should be developed and added to the Codex. A whole Codex article doesn't necessarily need to be created, it could be just a simple question/answer added to one of the appropriate Codex FAQ articles.

@figaro Kind of childish for such a grown man don't you think?

EDIT: can't you guys just ban him and get it over with?

Well I can think of one good reason to post instructions when possible, rather than links to external sources. And that is that we don't know how long those external sources will be there. At least if instructions are written here on the forum, they can be preserved for posterity and anyone wishing to take the trouble to search for them. Not as much glory or Google juice in that, I suppose. But hey, aren't we here to help for the warm fuzzies anyway? ;)

    figaro,
I've supported you on this but it sure looks like you have added "modlook" tags to a huge amount of posts to get back at MichaelH - you even gig him with tags.
Well I'm the one who cleaned up the mess and that p***es me off.
    Stop the childish crap.

edit - why not a compromise? Post tutorials to videos to your site but also post the codex article, also?

    I've supported you on this...

And I appreciate your support...it would be nice to see it here where the attack has been taking place. I think you understand all I have been doing is providing free, video help for people on common problems and issues...along with hundreds of other posts offering help. To have this all the sudden called "spam" and deleted without even contacting me is what I call childish.

it sure looks like you have added "modlook" tags to a huge amount of posts to get back at MichaelH - you even gig him with tags.

Guilty on both counts. Sorry it is causing you a problem...maybe you should leave them for MichaelH to clean up. You know, there is an old saying that goes along the lines..."people will react according to the way they are treated". If MichaelH wants to label the help I've been providing here as spam, then I'll be happy to make it real spam for him.

    Stop the childish crap.

Ready to stop anytime MichaelH is...

    why not a compromise?

I was not offered a compromise. I was labled a spammer and had months of my posts moderated without any notice or discussion.

Post tutorials to videos to your site but also post the codex article, also?

No problem...if that's the policy, just let it be known and have your rough moderator get off his power trip.

Sorry Samboll...I didn't see your edit in the following thead.

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/315495?replies=6

I'm willing to stop this, and continue providing help...like I always have...but not until MichaelH chimes in and agrees to stop his arbitrary "moderation".

No problem from me, as long as the links are to Codex, the forums, or wordpress.tv.

Well, looks like we're going to continue to have a problem. Glad to see you are following your own policy:

I'll be back often...Samboll...if you see spam here, it's not intended for you...I'd suggest letting MichaelH deal with it. It takes me hours to create and post a helpful video...only a few minutes to give the "spam czar" what he's looking for.

Figaro grow up. Your acting like a child. My 3 year old daughter acts more mature than you are right now. MichaelH is not being a child he is following policies and doing his job. This isn't even about you 'helping' people now, it's about you thinking your better than everyone else because you spend your life making videos. Good for you for providing the help but keep in mind it's not all about you.

And really? Ban me from commenting on your site? Do you just have to have the last word or something?

Sorry for sticking my nose into this, but I've been following this topic in the forum's email list as well here (as of today) and I have a few things to say.

@Figaro - While I can certainly understand your frustration with having your links removed, I must say that I feel that your video links should be considered spam and MichaelH is not in error for removing them.

These are not purely video links - Each links to your blog where you have advertising as well as offer Premium WordPress Support for rates well beyond that of the old I'll buy you a beer amount. Basically, I see this as an attempt to rope in new clients. I noticed that you host your videos on YouTube. Have you attempted to post a link to your video on YouTube? If the answer is "no" I would seriously look into your true motivations for posting here.

If you find your motivations are purely to help people, I would suggest that you contact wordpress.tv and request that your videos be added there. They seem to be welcoming:

To recommend a WordPress-related video, request a tutorial or give us some feedback, please use the form below. When you click submit, your message will be sent to us, yay!

If they post your video, then you can link to it all you want without fear of moderation.

I just looked through a few of the threads that you answered and it looks like 15 out of the 30 posts on your user page have moderated links that were most likely backlinks to your website. That's 50%.

Well, looks like we're going to continue to have a problem. Glad to see you are following your own policy:
    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/315495?replies=6

I checked out this thread to see what was going on, and following the link in question is miles away from following one of your tutorial links. First of all, there is no paid advertising. Second, There are no paid services offered. Third there are no links at all. This is purely a resource the seeks to provide information with no strings attached what-so-ever. I see no similarities in this comparison.

Well, those are my thoughts on this,
    Best wishes to all involved,
    -Mike

    oops! trouble in paradise figaro?

Im on the fence. As someone who was initially very skeptical of figaro, Im happy he's stuck around as long as he has.

that said -- Ive continued to be skeptical only because I happen to agree somewhat with the person that posted immediately prior to me about the support/theme stuff.

Not to take anything away from his site's helpfulness -- just that well.. when you're selling something on your site, you want people to click, and if helpful vids do it.. there ya go. I think if figaro were honest, he would cop to the fact that the vids help everyone all around, himself included.

Then again, whats wrong with that, I guess. There's no-one with a gun to a head after you click.

I must say, I do get a kick out of figaro pulling that "how many pages are there in my profile" feather out of his hat. Funny how that happens -- very funny.

    oops! trouble in paradise figaro?

No trouble for me...my site and any money I make from the site (which is a total of about $100 since I set it up) is not dependent on wordpress.org...all of which, and them some, I've donated back to WP plugin (Ozh admin menu--to name one) and theme (iNove to name one) developers. I have one full-time, good paying job, and I'm retired from another once, with a good pension. Think what you want...it's not about money for me. Putting links here is the most direct way to help people with WordPress problems.

I'll keep the site just the way it is and get just as much traffic as I ever have...no-follow links here are of no help. Of course, if I were simply interested in site traffic, there are much easier and quicker ways to get it...I could, for example, simply copy articles from the docs here and post them to my site...content is king and doing that on a regular basis would drive more Google traffic to my site than 10 videos and would take a fraction of my time...of course, it wouldn't help anyone, but my site.

When I logged in this morning, and created my new account so I could post ;-), I see there are lots of unanswered questions here...in the past, I would spend 30 minutes or so before heading off to work answering some. Today, when I finish this post, then first thing I'm going to do is save it (so I can repost it, just in case your rough moderator deletes it ;-), then I'm going to spend about 5 minutes giving MichaelH some stuff to look for, then I'm off.

Are you keeping up Michael? Are you starting to see what spam really is?

you lost my support with your childish actions. An adult would have wanted to have a dialogue privately first with whoever the problem was with. This get even mentality is for the kids.

This get even mentality is for the kids.

That's what I've been trying to say but it just seems to fuel his fire. I'm not sure if he is even who he says he is, retired with a full time job? A grown man wouldn't act so childish. He's even resorted to making people think I'm a jerk on his website even though I said I appreciate his videos and that they are helpful. I suppose I'm a jerk for taking sides with the mods on this one.

@figaro It's not like they are asking you to take your site down or something, you are making mountains out of molehills here. Seriously if you are who you say you are don't you have better things to do (like a real life) instead of spamming the forum some more? Or are you just one of those poor old men who hate their family and is angry at the world because life didn't turn out as planned?

I'm not trying to be a jerk in the matter figaro I'm simply agreeing that I understand where the mods are coming from. We can all sit around and talk crap all day but in the end it's just the internet. It's just words. If what people are saying here (on a website) is that serious to you then maybe you need to rethink your priorities. And life at that matter.
