We are having the same problem/error message. It started at the same time as the report above (around 5/9/2013)
We have tried a few things, none of which solved the problem.
I’ve reinstalled our Akismet key
I’ve upgraded to the most recent version of Akismet (2.5.7)
I’ve checked all our setting as instructed.
We are using inmotion hosting. It looks like it may be a hosting issue. Are you by chance using inmotion too?
Having the same problem here.
I am not using inmotion, I’m using name cheap.

I am having the same problem. Never occurred until this plugin update (been using the plugin for a year and a 1/2 now), so why would contacting the hosting make any difference? Just curious since there was never a prior conflict between the two.
Having this problem right now and *I am* the web host, so I’d be contacting myself.
Went to that page and it has two things — System Requirements and Firewall settings. Well, if either of those were wrong, Akismet wouldn’t work AT ALL, instead of intermittently.

I’ve been having this problem recently too. Akismet used to work fine for me. Now it is missing a lot of spam. I have gotten the error above and this morning after getting emailed about 608 spam I checked Akismet and saw:
“The key below was previously validated but a connection to akismet.com can not be established at this time. Please check your server configuration.”
but below that it says:
“All Akismet servers are available”
Much of the time Akismet is working and it has worked fine for years so I don’t think there is any problem with my host setup. Rather it appears to that the Akismet servers are intermittently down. This isn’t a one time thing but has been happening time-to-time for weeks.
I love the assistance Akismet gives when it works. Hope it gets back to business and smooths out soon.
