   Hi,

   Is there a way you can use the Akismet plugin/service if you are hosting your own blog? i.e. you have not signed up via wordpress.com and have actually installed it yourself?

   yes - but you still have to go to wordpress.com and sign up for the API key
   http://en.wordpress.com/signup/
   once you get that you're good to go
