I finally tried upgrading to the latest version of WP after not updating for over a year. I backed up my files, thankfully, because I had to restore them after the patch (upgrade) failed. I got the message: Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object in /home/content/a/n/a/analiese/html/wp-includes/taxonomy.php on line 289

Now when I go to login to wp-admin I get this message:

    Database Upgrade Required

Your WordPress database is out-of-date, and must be upgraded before you can continue.

The upgrade process may take a while, so please be patient.

    Upgrade WordPress

Any advice? I’d still like to upgrade but also need to just login to post. Thanks!

  • There’s a plugin that’s messing up with your upgrade. You will need to use your FTP and temporarily rename your /plugins/ something like /plugins.hold/. After this you’ll be able to login as usual.

Make sure that all plugins are up to date and compatible with your WordPress.

If I can recall the above message actually is calling register_taxonomy() and makes URL rewrite before the WordPress. A nasty plugin that much I know.

You don’t happen to have this plugin in by any chance http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/podcasting/changelog/ see the change log:

Emil, thanks so much for your advice. I renamed my plugins directory just as you suggested, but I still cannot login to wp-admin. I have a hosted account.
I get the same error message:

Should I try to update again? Please advise. Thanks!

Try switching to the Twenty Ten theme by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides. Then running the upgrade manually using /wp-admin/upgrade.php

This is your last resource, just in the case that @esmi’s suggest doesn’t work and I think that it will:

All fixed. I disabled the plugins folder (which was the problem) and did a manual update using the WordPress instructions. I then created a new plugins directory and loaded all new plugins and activated them. Perfect!

NextGen Gallery’s plugin gave me this notice so it might have been the problem:
“NextGEN Gallery contains some functions which are only available under PHP 5.2. You are using the old PHP 4 version, upgrade now! It’s no longer supported by the PHP group. Many shared hosting providers offer both PHP 4 and PHP 5, running simultaneously. Ask your provider if they can do this.”

My next project is to research how to do the upgrade to PHP 5.2.

    Thanks Emil and esmi.
