After installing a brand new wordpress on my hosting account, I tried to customize my theme and it says it is not wriatable. After looking at the installed files, the files inside themes and some other folders are owned by root. How could that happen? I am on a shared server and the folders were uploaded through ftp to my hostingf account. I don't have root access to the server!

By default files uploaded on a server (usually) are not writable because that would make your blog vulnerable to any hack(er).

You can change the permissions on the files you want to edit (usually it is chmod 666) - just don't forget to change them back after editing!!!
For the above reason I always advise to edit the files on your box and upload the modified version. (And keep a backup copy of the original, of course, just in case...)
