UpdraftPlus Backup and Restoration for WordPress
[resolved] After install, get 500 Error when select Settings -- interesting fix (12 posts)

    Hi David,

I just installed UpdraftPlus but when I select "Settings" in the Plugins page or through Settings > UpdraftPlus Backups, I get a "500: Internal server error" page.

I just found the answer...at least for people hosted on NetworkSolutions:
    find this file:
    /cgi-bin/.php/php.coalesced.ini
    and remove this line:
    zend_extension = /usr/services/vux/php5/lib/php/extensions/ZendOptimizer_real.so

There must be some sort of conflict. I spent an hour pulling out my hair and thought it useful to pass it along.

    Hi NoTearsWeb,

Thanks for the tip. UD doesn't make any particularly unusual PHP calls that other plugins don't, so it may be that this was a one-off - that the Zend cache recorded something corrupt, and that turning it off and then on again may work. (I once had that happen with eAccelerator, another product of the same kind - not on UD, but a different plugin; when I tracked it down, it wasn't the plugin, it was just eAccelerator cached junk and then produced the 500 page every time until I cleared the cache).

Same issue, same hosting service. I commented out the suspect line in php.coalesced.ini, and was able to access the UpdraftPlus page within the site - and was able to run a backup. After that, I uncommented the line and re-uploaded the ini file; everything still seems to work. I'll post another update to this thread if more problems occur, but it looks as if David's hunch is probably correct (that will work after being turned off and back on)...

    Hi TABarlow,

Thanks for the information. Perhaps you could contact Network Solutions and report back on the response? (If they fix their problem then that's good... if they don't then it's still useful data for people to know whether Network Solutions care to fix their problems or not!).

    Hi miltonics,

You're welcome! If you could also report Network Solutions and alert them of this issue, that would be helpful. The problem seems to be reproducible, so it would be great if they could work out how to fix it.

David Anderson: After a litany of issues with NS, I finally had to bail on them (I've spent the last couple of weeks migrating sites). I'm with another host now, so I can't offer any other updates as to the real source of the issue. I didn't want you to think I abandoned this thread, but your fix was the solution for this issue when hosted on NS.

Hi there - I have a similar problem where the settings page won't load, but am not on NS (with sibername). My cgi-bin is empty, so I'm not sure where to find the php.coalesced.ini file, or if there is a different file that I'd need to edit. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

Please can you open a new thread? If you're not with Network Solutions, then you probably have a different issue.
