   I downloaded wordpress but when i try to open it, i get an error message saying 'application not found'
   can anyone tell me why this might be happening and what i can do about it?

   You download WordPress from http://wordpress.org/download/ and save to your computer. If you have webhost, upload WP files to server. If you're installing WordPress locally, i.e. in your computer http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Installation_Techniques#Installing_WordPress_Locally

   I do have a webhost but I cannot get that far. I downloaded wordpress several times, but when I click on it, I get an error message and I cant go any further

   You need to unpack the .zip or .tar.gz downloaded. You can download and use http://www.7-zip.org/ or something like winzip
