Advice on WP as a CMS - where to start (1 post)

I'm trying to broaden my knowledge of WordPress and would like to be able to have several editable templates to choose from, is this possible?

Currently what I'm doing is creating a static page, plugging in the header, footer and sidebar and then choosing this page from the drop down when creating the page in WordPress itself, so that it appears in my NAV.

The only way I can then edit this page is through my HTML editor, but I'd like to be able to choose form several templates from my drop down (two, three, four column or whatever) and then add the content through the admin area.

This is probably either completely possible, or impossible - I'd like to know if it is and if so - how?! Where do I start? I have excellent html / css knowledge and a basic understanding of php / mysql.

    Thanks in advance!
