the lady who administrated the website left the business some 3 yrs ago and we dont know the passwrod or username. i have the editor username and password. Am i able to change the administrator details as i need to change the basic layout of the website etc?

Not if you only have editor access, no. You will have to go into your database and locate the primary admin's username (ie the user with the id of 1) and change the password to one of your own choosing. See Resetting_Your_Password for the full details. Then you should be able to login as the main admin and make any changes necessary.
