• Hi, this is my first wordpress site and am pretty novice at all this and hitting a brick wall. I have followed WP how to optimized articles, suggestions on this forum, and am using ‘W3 Cache’, ‘WP Database Manager’, and optimized images. My front end speed seem ok, getting a ~80/B score on google developer & Yslow.

My problem is that the back-end admin is extremely slow and frequently get throttled by my dreamhost hosting and receive the ‘Allowed memory size exhausted’ error. I have tried the suggestions in the forum regarding that error with no real success. With no plugins active the admin speed is fine. When re-adding them, one particular plugin doesn’t tank the speed, but rather incrementally gets worse with each plugin re-activated. Using the ‘P3 Plugin Performance Profiler’,the plugins that are using the most resources are The Events Calendar PRO, and WPBakery Visual Composer which are both crucial to my site. The remaining plugin appear to be fairly lite, but there are several of them that I am using but mostly all highly recommended plugins.

Is this entirely a hosting issue? Dreamhost just suggested optimizing my site, which I have. The site is actually going to be migrated to a Bluehost once completed. Will things be the same/better/worse with bluehost?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

  • You’re using the Espresso theme, which is a commercial theme. Plugins and/or hosting may be contributing to the problem, but I would go to theme support first.

    Try going here: Espresso Support.

i have. this forum is my last resort.

There really is nothing else that we can suggest that Dreamhost don’t seem to have covered. Your only options right now are to:

    – reduce the number of plugins you are using
    – consider switching to a less resource-heavy theme
    – consider moving to a dedicated server.

Yeah this has been a really frustrating first experience with WordPress. It seems like the key to WordPress is not using plugins or themes which I never would have expected.

Sorry to hear your first foray into WP isn’t going as smoothly as hoped. Having a dedicated developer your first time can be worth the extra expense. They can be there to test the theme, plugin combos and do some explaining/hand-holding to get through any road bumps before and after launch.

Keep in mind that WordPress itself is stable and that the themes and plugins listed here on wordpress.org have been vetted. (That doesn’t mean that every combo of plugins/themes is trouble-free.) The key to using WP isn’t to “avoid using plugins”, it’s making sure that paid resources outside of the sphere of wordpress.org, such as your paid theme authors, hosting co and developers are providing you with timely customer service.

If they have already, then it sounds like you have isolated a particular plugin as contributing to the speed issues, so perhaps the next step is simply finding a substitute plugin for that particular functionality. Don’t get discouraged, best of luck moving forward!

thanks for the response, Turning off all the less crucial plugins doesnt seem to help at all. The theme and main plugins are all very highly rated and widely used so am confused how these are the cause.

The rating of the plugins & theme doesn’t matter one jot in this situation. It’s the cumulative load that they are placing on the server that is the issue.
