    There is a reason why I don't normally update software that works just fine as it is....

    Anyhow - after upgrading to the latest version of WP i noticed an issue in the dashboard with some links being unresponsive. After disabling all the plugins I found the culprit & deactivated it.

    Since that point I'm unable to login to wp-admin with my admin password & when i ask for the password to be sent i receive the message:

    "The e-mail could not be sent.
    Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function..."

    There was an SMTP plugin of some sort there but i dont remember it actually being activated.

    Any thoughts?

    i've gone through nearly every point there & still no luck.

    I followed the link from Frances Colanza on resetting the username & password in php admin, cleared the cache, deleted & reuploaded wp login file etc.

    Not sure what to try next. any thoughts?

    Problem solved - i added this to the wp-config file

    @define('ADMIN_COOKIE_PATH', '/');
