   Front end of site is fine, but when I log in to the back end the style/theme of the admin area is not displaying so I am presented with lots of lists and tiny little icons and well, it's basically unnavigable and unusable.

   I updated to wp 2.9.2 a few weeks ago but since then both my client and I have logged in and the admin area was fine.

   Has anyone else encountered this before? Any ideas?

   It looks like you fell victim to the hack that's going around and affecting all PHP files (not just WordPress). Remain calm and carefully follow this guide:
