[resolved] Admin Bar 3.1 Appears Blank (6 posts)

I've just upgraded a site from 3.0.5 to 3.1 and the admin bar would be pretty neat to have, except it's appearing blank on the public side. I am using a custom theme with very few frills in terms of taking advantage of wordpress stuff. The site is: http://www.furdev.com/ I have a sidebar login on the right with a registration link. I have tried turning of all my plugins to see if it's a plugin, but it's not a plugin as it stil did it when I turned them all off.

I have another wordpress 3.1 upgrade using the default theme and the admin bar appears very well on there.

    Any ideas or thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Asher

  2. Alas, we cannot see it unless we're logged in so ... ;)

Can you, temporarily, switch to the default twentyten theme? See if it works? Just to make SURE it's a theme bug.

You can register and log in using the sidebar login widget I thought. But besides that, it's now temporarily switched to twenty ten and in twentyten the admin bar appears to work correctly. Twenty ten is for now still live at the same address.

Is there something a theme could do or not do that would affect the admin bar?

    Thanks,
    Asher

Yes. Make sure your theme has the wp_footer() call in the footer.php file.

Whew. I followed Otto's advice and it worked beautifully. Had to do some tweakage and reinstall 3.1 but Otto's sage words were the key to what I wanted. That's what my template was missing all this time!

    Thanks Otto, and everybody else,
    Asher

Nice resoluton. Otto's advice worked for me too as I was having the same problem with asherwolf... I wonder what the wp_footer() could do though as I might have accidentally deleted it few years back when I was still starting tweaking my blog for the very first time...

I mean, what could happen in a blog without a wp_footer() in the footer.php file? I seem to have been running a blog without it but notcied nothing significant not until the Admin bar for the WP 3.1 came.
