I am looking to add wordpress blog as a SECOND database where another not-wordpress database already exists. The first attempt disabled the old, dont know if my error or webhost but what is the safest way to accomplish this?

I've not had any problems like that - did you take the default option to have all the tables for wordpress starting with the default "wp"? I've got a single database for an Elgg installation, two WordPress ones (I gave them different prefixes), and a media wiki one. They're all ignoring each other & working as they should.
Does your webhost limit the number of tables you can have in a single database or something?
