    Hi,

    I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to make sidebar navigation without using plugins. The only thing i found is this, which seems exactly what i need but i can't wrap my head around it. Could you please make it simpler for me? What do i have to do to make a sidebar navigation for twenty eleven child theme? I have a freshly created child theme for twenty eleven according to wordpress support instructions and no other changes.

    can you specify in more detail, what kind of sidebar navigation you want?

    do you want to keep the main navigation?

    have you tried using the default 'Custom Menu' widget together with a corresponding custom menu?

    and to get the sidebar to show in single posts and pages, try to use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twenty-eleven-theme-extensions/ or the coding from my article.

    I simply want to make my main navigation menu appear on the left side vertical instead of above the content and across. It might be that i don't know how to express what i'm looking for and my google searches returned different than i expected.

    have you tried using the default 'Custom Menu' widget together with a corresponding custom menu?

    I know that i can yous these tools to make custom menu's but i can't find anywhere an option to make my menu vertical and on the left (in the sidebar?)

    and to get the sidebar to show in single posts and pages, try to use http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/twenty-eleven-theme-extensions/ or the coding from my article.

    From what i understand i need Twenty Eleven Theme Extensions in order to make the sidebar available and then make the navigation inside it?

    This is very confusing for such a simple task :(

    i can't find anywhere an option to make my menu vertical and on the left

    there is no such an option.

    a:
    crate a custom menu;
    b:
    use the 'Custom Menu' widget;
    c:
    use the 'theme extensions' plugin to have a sidebar on static pages and single posts.
    d:
    edit header.php or use css to remove/hide the horizontal menu.
    e:
    optionally use additional css to format the vertical sidebar menu

    for such a simple task

    moving a menu position is not a simple task.

    You could also consider looking for a theme that already has the menu in the sidebar -- try searching for "menu in left sidebar" in the theme search function:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/search.php?q=menu+in+left+sidebar

    WPyogi, that's where i originally started, but after experimenting with some themes i found that most of them are cluttered with effects and nested uls, lis and other stuff i don't really understand. Maybe you have a suggestion of a clean theme with a sidebar nav? Would appreciate it greatly.

    No, I don't know of any off the top of my head, but if you are new to WP, there is likely to be that kind of "stuff" in any theme. Learning a bit more about how WP works and spending some time playing around with it may be your best bet... There are many good tutorials, books and videos out there...Google around to find them.
