Adding loop to a page

I’m trying to add a post loop to a page, but it seems the php is not parsed.

For instance, I would like to have page1 show all posts from category1, but when I put the loop code where you’d put the code for the page, it just seems to echo the code back to me.

Is there a way to do this? Am I missing something?
