Is the issue you cannot get the logo in the header.php file (of your Child Theme) at all?

yes. i have tried a number of changes:
/* Logo above searchform */
#branding #searchform {top: 4.8em;} /* moves search down slightly */
#branding hgroup {
background: url('images/logo.png';);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
background-position: 100% 0px;
}
There is no change

Where did you make that change?
It’s not apparent in your Child Theme style.css file.

Is the image in an uploads folder?

So it won’t be in “images”…
background: url('images/logo.png';);
It’ll be somewhere in uploads. Also don’t forget you only need 1 semicolon at the very end, e.g:
background: url('/path/to/image/in/uploads/folder/logo.png');
