   How would you add a 'by John Doe' to the data format?

   Under: Options, General, Default Date Format

   I tried: F j, Y by John Doe

   and it ignored the 'by John Doe'.

   You don't. It's not used to format the time-date information.

   Why not just add it into the theme?

   I didn't know how to do that but then found:
