    Trying to find a way to do this. It seems like someone must have done this before?

    Try the Advanced TinyMCE plugin - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/tinymce-advanced/

    I think that it will allow you to add the missing icon.

    I find it strange that WordPress provides a button for <!--more--> but not <!--next page-->

    I don't understand the logic behind this

    It might just be Tiny MCE's fault. TinyMCE is a tool that's incorporated in WordPress and perhaps these are simply the default... I'm sure as well that if we were to look at the numbers, more people use <!--more--> than <!--next page-->.
