Adding a sidebar to the right? (12 posts)

    Hi guys,

I'm interested in modifying the theme to insert a sidebar to the right, for a tag cloud, widgets, and google ads. Has anyone attempted this? Is it simple at all?

    Thanks!

I'd like to do the same thing, primarily so I can use the Side Matter plugin. http://wanglophile.com/side-matter-test/ shows how the lack of a sidebar means the Side Matter citations don't appear.

I have tried adding a sidebar myself (in conjunction with various sidebar plugins), but have only been able to create one on the top or bottom of the post, not the side.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi there, adding a sidebar would require substantial modifications to a child theme. If you're very comfortable with HTML and CSS it could be done, but it would take a fair amount of work, as Ryu was designed to be a single-column theme.

You can get started learning about child themes through these resources:

    Best of luck.

I'm comfortable with HTML and CSS and know how to create child themes. I'm also aware it was intentionally designed to be one column. I was curious if anyone did the deed already, before I embarked on the mission

Here's some basic info about adding a sidebar:

Then you'd need to create a custom template and add the sidebar -

So it is not possible to add a right sidebar to the Ryu theme in a straightforward fashion? I do not know anything about HTML/CSS/...:-(

That's correct, a right sidebar is not part of the Ryu theme's design. If you're not familiar with PHP coding, you might consider hiring a web designer to make a change like that as a small project, the pricing can be pretty reasonable. Consider asking at http://jobs.wordpress.net/ or at your local WordPress meetup group. (Try popping in a search engine the phrase WordPress meetup together with the name of your town or city.)

I also searched a little bit at http://wordpress.org/themes/ and found a couple of themes with optional right sidebars that you might want to have a peek at to see if they strike your fancy:

You might also try searching to see what else you can find.

Hi Kathryn, many thanks for your swift and kind reply! In the meantime I have switched to another theme, in order to avoid complex adjustments of the Ryu theme.

  10. My pleasure! I'd love to know what theme you're using if you don't mind sharing. :-)

I chose for the 'Elemin' theme:-) (self-hosted version) I am very happy with it, it provides a lot of flexibility!

Something else then, which is completely off-topic, so I fully understand if you are not willing to comment on it. Two days ago I started a thread related to determining the playback speed and playback quality of embedded YouTube videos (http://wordpress.org/support/topic/youtube-force-playback-quality-and-speed?replies=1). No one has replied thus far, but I cannot imagine that other WordPress users have not been looking for the same things ... Is there some forum topic / blog / website / ... where I can find more info about this?

Lovely! Thanks for letting me know.

About your YouTube question, I'll have a look and add some thoughts there.
