I am working on a site that wants to display the latest blog post on the front page. I have this done but I would like to make a second page to display 5 or so of the most recent blog posts. I tried renaming the index.php to blog.php and visiting that but it did not seem to work. How would I go about doing this?

I am able to cover the limit on the front page just fine. I would like a second page that displays 5 or so topics just like a main blog page. I just dont know how to make a second page appear with blog posts on it while keeping the front page as well.

Well you could use this technique:
How can I have a static front page and posts display on a page called Blog?

Or just use the WordPress native archive process that will automatically display posts in category, tag, author, or date manner...see Template Hierarchy and Stepping Into Templates.

Or use a Page and display posts that way...see the Page of Posts example in the Pages article.

Hmmmm I was reading about pages and saw that if I name a page page-id.php ID being the pages ID, in my instance its 12. Now if I name a page page-12.php the content of that page should show up when visiting the link attached to that ID. Unfortunately when doing so nothing comes up. Why is this? This is what I need done because I am kind of duplicating the blog posts page except this one will be displaying more.

That feature is only available at 2.9.

Note 2.9 still in testing phase.

Would there be anyway to get around this until 2.9 comes out? Also when is the 2.9 release?

Well you could install 2.9-rare and use that or install the patch listed here: http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/11055

2.9 is likely later this month or early December...but that's just a guess...

Why not create a new page template and use Query_posts to define which posts you want displayed on the page?
