I have sidebar widgets activated, and I can edit the text fields, rss, and move search in and out, things like that, and my site updates beautifully. However, if I add a widget (moving it into my wp-content/plugins/widgets directory, they don't magically show up in the sidebar widget panel for me to actually use. Am I putting them in the wrong place, or is there some way I'm supposed to tell sidebar widgets to look for them or activate them?

I think you should put them in the plugins directory - don't remember that a /widgets/ directory would be required.

that didn't seem to make a difference, no magic yet (but thanks for the instantaneous response!

    1. Put it in the plugins directory.
    2. Go admin > PLugins > activate
(I didn't say it because it is so "obvious"... apparently, not :)

yes - as dumb as it sounds, that was the problem. I thought you only had to activate Sidebar Widgets, and then anything in the widgets folder would show up there. Pulling the widget out to the plugin level AND activating it made it show up in the Sidebar widgets control panel. Both pieces of advice were essential. My elapsed time getting this answer from you was a 7 min, 58 sec. I worked on it alone for 3 hours first! thanks a bunch!

Glad it works. Could you, please, mark this as "resolved" ? (up near the title)

excellent - you taught me something there too - wondered how the system knew things were resolved!
