add_action, processed in background (1 post)

I've searched for this, but the number of posts with "background" (as in image) hasn't led me to my answer...

I would like to trigger a rather lengthy function (lengthy from a loop/database processing perspective) after a post save. This takes about :12 to run, so I'd rather not have the admin UI hang when doing so.

Is there a way to add the action that is not just low priority, but runs in the background or asynchronously?

My alternative workaround is to have the action add a process to the cron queue to run the function..this way it would run shortly after the post save.
