How do I add a widget image to my sidebar if I don't have the image's URL?

    Thanks in advance,
    Ms. Petersen

You will need the path to the image. You cannot display an image without it. The path (image URL) is simply where you uploaded it to, plus the file name and file extension.

Thanks Clayton. I apologize, because I'm very new to this and don't quite understand what you're saying.

This is what I'm trying to do. I want to put a picture from another blog on my sidebar. I do this a lot, and usually, all I have to do is click on the picture itself for it to take me to a screen of the picture only. I then copy that URL into my image widget, and it works fine.

However, sometimes clicking on the picture does nothing. I remain on the blog itself, so I have no picture URL. Does that make sense?

Can you please explain to me how to do what you described in this situation?

Thanks again, and sorry for being so dense about this.

The problem with what you are describing, is usually referred to as "hot linking". When you place the internet address (URL) of someone else's images on your own site in order to make them appear on your site, what you are doing is actually calling the image from the web server where the image actually resides. That means that you are using the other sites bandwidth to provide your own readers with someone else's content. (Essentially stealing bandwidth).

That's okay if you have the blog or site owners permission, but if you don't, it can be problematic.

Oh, my. That doesn't sound very good, does it. :)

Let me explain. There is an extremely large group of paper crafters on the net, and one thing we commonly do is sponsor contests to thank those who read/follow our blogs. We call these prizes "blog candy," (rubber stamps, ink, special scissors, flowers, things of that sort), and put a picture of the blog candy in our blog.

For someone to be eligible to win the blog candy, s/he must copy that same picture and post it in his/her own blog, usually on the sidebar. Most of the time, I do this by clicking on the picture which takes me to the picture-only window, and then copy the URL from there.

However, the problem arises when I try to click on the picture, but I am not taken anywhere. For example, at the Peace, Love & Crafting site I am unable to get to the picture-only window, and thus cannot get the URL.

So, can you help me figure out how to get the URL? Or is there a different process in place for this situation?

Thanks so much for sticking with me on this. I really appreciate it.

Pretty much anything you do to view the source code for the image should reveal the url. Right click on the image, then properties - in IE, should show you the image url or you can view the source from the browser tool bar. As 123milliseconds mentioned, if you use Firefox, you can use the tools menu or right-click on the image, then view the image info from the context menu.
