   I thought that the integrated thumbnail function in wordpress 2.9.x consisted in putting a thumbnail beside the post title. Instead the thumbnail option put my image inside the post.

   Is there a way to put the thumbnail beside the post title instead of inside the post?

   Edit your theme templates. As long as the post_thumbnail() is in the Loop, it can be anywhere on the page.

   I suppose there is not an easier way...
   Anything relevant about thumbnails in WP 3.0?

   I don't understand this. Just follow esmi instruction. Doesn't matter its 2.9 or 3.0, still the same. What else do you want?
