    I want to add unique description/keywords meta tags to my posts and pages (not just the overall site). The codex goes so far as to tell you that this is possible, but it does NOT say HOW to actually do it.

    It does say that it can be done with a plugin, but for some reason I do not have a plugin subpanel in my admin panel.

    Can anyone tell me how to add a meta tag to an individual page or post?

    Is your blog on wordpress.com?

    Even if it is, tags can be added under the "Post Tags" box when creating or editing posts. If you don't see it, check out screen options on the top right of the screen.

    Yes, it's: http://americanmastercraftsmen.wordpress.com/

    My understanding of "Post Tags" was that it was only used to help visitors navigate my site. I thought "Post Tags" were not meta tags at all, and hence not searched by search engines or anything.

    Is this correct?

    You can't install your own plugins or customize your theme much with wordpress.com blogs. That's why some options are missing.

    No, they're meta tags. See http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/

    @williamennis

    this forum is for users of the wordpress.org cms software; the difference to blogs at wordpress.com is quite substantial.
