[closed] "Add Media" doesn't work after upgrading to 3.5 (39 posts)

I've just upgraded to WP3.5 and "Add Media" button on Edit Post screen stopped working.

I can upload and edit pictures in my Media Library and attached them to posts. However I have no way of actually placing any pictures within my post.

    Have you tried:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    - resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    - re-uploading all files & folders - except the wp-content folder - from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

For anyone who installed 3.5 this advice (deactivating, switching themes, resetting plugins, re-uploading folders) is way too much for WordPress to ask of its customers. People should just avoid upgrading to 3.5 period. It is not worth the loss of functionality at all. Word to the wise. Keep your older version of WordPress and do not upgrade to 3.5 at all.

is way too much for WordPress to ask of its customers

Why? You installed the plugins & themes. Deactiving them is no more difficult. and WordPress is free software. It does not have "customers".

People should just avoid upgrading to 3.5 period.

By all means... if you want to open your site(s) up to a real risk of being hacked. Rule number one when when securing your site is to always keep WordPress up to date. If you cannot manage this yourself, perhaps you need to consider hiring someone to carry out the work for you.

And next time, please remember that it is impolite to interrupt another poster's ongoing thread with (non-helpful) comment of your own and it causes significant problems for the forum's volunteers. Please post your own topics.

    Esmi,

I think you are asking me to shut down my website while I'm troubleshooting the WP3.5

I appreciate your answer and suggestions, but I didn't sign-up for beta testing of WP3.5. Now I'm finding myself spending the morning looking for a problem that's definitely not caused by me.

Please don't blast mdesouza. In my view your response was not any more helpful than his.

Welcome to WordPress Troubleshooting 101 - a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits. I've just upgraded 13 sites without the slightest problem, so whatever this is, it's specific to your site/install.

If you want to find out what the problem is and fix it, you need to start troubleshooting.

    Theme Diva,

I think I've just wrote that I'm spending my morning working on it.

My mistake - I was expecting a constructive support from a moderator on this forum.

I was having the same problem and deleted out old plugins we were not using AND deactivated some to see what was causing the problem. Bingo, found the culprit plugin, deactivated it, and media feature works like a charm now.

Now that I can get access to the new Gallery, I am super happy as it is exactly the functionality I was looking for in that feature (and perfect timing for a post I have coming out tomorrow).

What was the pluging that was causing the problem?

I was using Photo Dropper, which can insert stock photos into your posts.

Such as? There is no magic bullet. You have to start by narrowing sown the field of investigation. as I said, basic WordPress troubleshooting. If you cannot work with us, then we cannot help you.

    Theme Diva & Forum Moderator,

If you only read my previous post you would know that I'm already doing this.

There is absolutely no need to attack anybody here. It only adds an insult to the injury

    I'm already doing this

Doing what? Have to carried out all of the steps I suggested above yet? If so, can see see the site?

    "I'm already doing this"
    Not: "I've done it"

I went through all the steps - no improvement.

    Website: http://www.gazetagazeta.com/

  16. Can you do these steps:

    - deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    - switching to the Twenty Eleven theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

And then let us know when you've done them?

I just looked at your site and you're currently running Theme Name: Gazeta brazy v21 as well as a number of plugins.

As Esmi has already pointed out a) this is only temporary step and b) it could help you identify where your problem is.

Repeating what Esmi already stated: If you cannot work with us, then we cannot help you.

    Here it is:
Website switched to Twenty Eleven theme
    ALL plugins deactivated

"Add Media" button works ONCE and only when adding a new post, but it doesn't work at all when trying to insert a picture in a previously posted article.

I'm not seeing Twenty Eleven or Twenty Twelve on your site.

  19. Sorry, I keep getting the WP-Super-Cache page.

<!-- Dynamic page generated in 2.102 seconds. -->
    <!-- Cached page generated by WP-Super-Cache on 2012-12-12 12:07:13 -->
    <!-- super cache -->

Which is probably a caching issue on my side which may be why I do not see the Twenty Eleven version.

but it doesn't work at all when trying to insert a picture in a previously posted article.

When you attempt you insert a picture into a previously posted article and it does not work do you get any errors in your webserver's error_log file? The request should get logged into your web server's access_log so if there is an error you should be able to line up the time stamp in the log.

Thank you Jan - now we are talking.
I'll check the log and let you know asap

  21. ...You were talking when Esmi was providing support, I was just assisting her and she's more on point and has better replies then I do...

    To answer you questions:
absolutely nothing happens when I click on "Add Media" button.
I don't see any new entries in web server's access_log. I've send a request to my webhost just to check if I'm missing anythig.

I'll switch the website to my regular template for now (at least the phone will stop ringing). Please let me know when you need it in Twenty Eleven theme.

Did you try re-uploading all files & folders - except the wp-content folder - from a fresh download of WordPress? And if you did, did you ensure that you deleted the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones.

do you mean to delete (or rename) all folders,
    re-install WP and all plugins?

  25. Looking at the Add Media button, it could be a Javascript issue. Can you try these steps on your browser?

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Your_Browser_to_Diagnose_JavaScript_Errors

If the Javascript is failing to execute then the error should show up on your browser in the javascript console.

    Thank you Jan,
I'll look at this, but the problem is not limited only to my computer. I have some contributors reporting the same issue on both PC and MAC

    Another website: http://www.crepealicious.ca

    The same problem.
Brand new website. No plugins. Still in Twenty Eleven theme

  30. Avi Jit, Can you please not cross post threads like that? The one you referring to may not have anything to do with the problem and that one is unresolved too so it's not really helping here.

From another thread that may have something related as I believe it may be javascript related:

What you are describing is javascript failing in multiple places.

Have you read the master list and tried the steps outlined there?

Have you ever used the "BulletProof Security" plugin at any point, ever?

@tkniat, focusing on the original site, have you used that plugin in the past? I'm asking for informational purposes to attempt to narrow down the possible causes.
