Support » Fixing WordPress » Add me as a new User / Modify frontpage

  • Hi,

I’m really very new to WordPress and I have taken over this job from another guy who has set up an account for a colleague of mine for our school website. We need to set me up as a new user so that I can add and modify our website. My colleague can get onto the admin page but can’t see anywhere to add a new user to it.

I’m sorry if this is a repetition of an old post but I’ve looked on your forum and I’m afraid as I’m very new to WordPress I am struggling a bit.

Also, while we’re on here, we need to get access to the school frontpage but that appears to be hidden from us in the webpage file area.

How can we access that and modify it as it needs updating?

    many thanks,

    J

  • To add a new user in WordPress simply login to WordPress dashboard (wp-admin directory) and from the Left Hand Side menu select Users node. From there you can add new users or modify existing ones.

AS regards the front page of your website, it depends how your WordPress and theme is configured. Check if it is configured to use a static front page (from the WordPress settings) which means the front page is a typical WordPress page.

Hiya, thanks for your reply however my colleague doesn’t have the Users node on the Left Hand Side menu.

We’ve looked through all of the package and still can’t see the word users at all.

Again many thanks for your reply but if you could give me any more help that’d be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    J

It means that the user you are using does not have administrative privileges.

Thanks, the issue is that the guy that set up the account has left and it’s impossible to contact him. Is there anyway of contacting WordPress directly and getting them to set us up an account with full administrative priveleges?

Can you log in your hosts website administration panel?

wordpress.org distributes and documents the WordPress application but has no connection with any site running that software. You need to contact the site owner and that’s not something we can help you with.

Is there a way that WordPress can change the Admin rights for us so that my colleague can become senior admin with all the Admin privileges?

We simply can’t access the frontpage and all we need to do is get to it, modify it and re-load it, the only way to do this is if we get more admin rights to the site.

Not via the dashboard, no bit it could be done via the database.

Using Phpmyadmin (or another MySQL management tool), first backup your database. Then navigate to your wp_usermeta table and locate the meta_key called “wp_capabilities” for the relevant user_id. Change the meta-value for this record to:

    a:1:{s:13:"administrator";b:1;}

Thanks, but I’m afraid that’s a bit beyond me, is there anyway the WP can make my colleague have full admin rights?

I think that’s the main issue we need to get to, I think once we’ve got that then we can modify the web front page from that.

wordpress.org distributes and documents the WordPress application but has no connection with any site running that software. So it’s not something we can help you with directly. Perhaps you need to consider hiring someone?
