I'm trying to add an external link to a post. The correct html is appearing when I use the link button, or enter the html manually, but nothing appears on the preview or published page.
    How can I fix this?

Did you enter the URL text

    I have tried three things:
    1) Entering the URL as text in the link button box - this inserts the html but the link does not appear on the published post.
    2) Entering the correct html manually
    3) As nothing else worked, I entered the URL directly into the text, but obviously it is not that useful when it isn't a link!

You either need to write out the code in code view

    <a href="link">link text</a>

or in the visual editor, type whatever text you want linked, highlight it, and click the link (looks like a chain) then type in your URL

If that doesn't work, try deactivating plugins, and switching to twentyeleven theme to see if either is conflicting with your links
