I would like to see this as well. If you create an account on my site and login you will see the message button with the amount of messages you have received. You can refer to that as an example if you want. I am still using WPU atm, so the way it is implemented is probably different, but you may get an idea of how it could work.

I would also like to personally see a way to display the user rank image, check members, and display a button to check new posts on the forum (see pixelsmashers.com after logged in and look at the top next to the avatar for setup example).
Apologies for the double post, but I misread the request. I am not sure if what I wrote about is already in place, but that would be a nice edition as well. However, my site also takes you to the user’s profile when you click on their user name (using old WPU) in their comment. You may want to check that out:
