Does anybody know if there is a relatively simple way to add a left side bar to the Connections theme? Basically, I want to change it from two columns to three.

There is never a "simple" way.
Re-design the theme - if you want it 3-col.
    (or pick a 3-col theme)

Good point Moshu....Let me rephrase my initial question. Can anyone give some direction on how to redesign the Connections theme so that I can add a right-sidebar.

Which version of Connection theme, you use? because Connections theme by default comes with Right Sidebar only.

Rok, I was doing that all day, I meant a left-sidebar. Hopefully, I'll be thinking a bit clearer today.

Ajay http://ajaydsouza.com/ released a design called connections reloaded 1.5 and his site uses a left-sidebar design. May be you could ask him.

I have used connections reloaded and blended it with sidebar code from another theme, you'll have to work on the CSS to reposition the sidebar. Shouldn't be too hard.
