Add a (first) sidebar

Hey! I bought a wordpress layout and use it at dave-annable.org.
Now I have theme switcher and I hate to change things in both layout all the time. I read that it´s better to have a sidebar with text widgets because then I would just change the stuff ones. Right now I have two sidebars but they are coded in the footer and not as real wordpress sidebar. I read how to add a second sidebar, telling me to copy the first one and all but I don´t even have a first one. Can anyone link me or tell me what to do to create a first sidebar and where I need to add code? Thanks.
