[closed] 'Active' on GoDaddy, but not on web! (12 posts)

Two days ago I moved a WordPress website from another host to GoDaddy, followed the instrux step by step and talked to a GoDaddy tech to confirm I'd done everything right. "Yep," he said. "I can see your site from my machine. It'll take a day to propagate so that you can see it too, but all your files are in order and everything's fine."

After 48 hours, the site — isuroon.org — still shows a generic "Hello world!" page with the name "Isuroon" (it's a Somali word, BTW) and a line that reads "Just another WordPress site."

I spent three hours on the phone this morning with a GoDaddy helper who led me down a dozen blind alleys and ultimately told me to click "Log in" on the WordPress page showing up at isuroon.org so i could get into the dashboard. He told me to enter my new FTP Admin User Name and password. They didn't work. I then tried every other possible combination of usernames and passwords — none of which were accepted. Clicking "Lost Your Password?" and entering my FTP username (or, alternatively, all other possible usernames I can think of) does nothing; after the click, the password-retrieval page just comes back blank.

The final answer from the GoDaddy tech: "Sorry, we don't support WordPress. It's not our product. You'll just have to find a solution somewhere else." Alas, getting WordPress on the phone is impossible, and I don't have a clue what to do. I'm guessing there's something wrong with my settings, or there's something the tech doesn't know about how to make GoDaddy and WordPress work together.

I don't know *what* the problem might be, but I'm at my wit's end. Can someone please, please help me?

*sigh* The quality of support does seem terribly variable at GoDaddy.

getting WordPress on the phone is impossible

This, volunteer based, community, forum is the main support for WordPress. It's free software - so you didn't pay for any support.

Right now, I can't see anything wrong with your site - other than it appears to be a vanilla (basic) WordPress install and you apparently can't login. With regard to your login issues, see:

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Resetting_Your_Password
    Video: http://www.francescolanza.com/2007/10/24/password-admin-reset/

As for your previous site, how did you move it exactly? What instructions did you follow?

Looks like you have a fresh install of 3.2 and must have a new database setup.

what version did you have at your old host and do you still have backup of database.

@ govpatel: If the latest version of WP is 3.2, I believe the version at the old host was one version back. DO I still have a backup? That depends on whether these two files, which I downloaded as I followed the GoDaddy instructions, qualify:

    isuroon_wp_20110720_732.sql (2.3 MB)
    isuroon.wordpress.2011-07-17.xml (176 KB)

If their size indicates that I've botched the upload, I suspect I can get the files I need from the old host.

I don't quite understand what you mean in writing that I "must have a new database setup." Are you saying that the backup files I have can't "talk" to the new WordPress installation on GoDaddy? Or that I may have missed uploading the proper files? Or . . . ?

I'm sorry to be such a neophyte. We are a startup nonprofit and we *had* a web wizard, but . . . well, now we don't.

@kate-be-late Did you get everything resolved? It appears so from going to isuroon.org. @Govpatel was right it sounds like you had a fresh install when you moved over and just needed to restore your old DB to the account. If you still need any assistance please let us know. ^Colby Go Daddy Social Media Team

@ Colby: Well, not everything is resolved — but I'm closing in on completion. I must say, I'd still be wandering aimlessly in the desert if not for govpatel, who has shown great kindness to our little nonprofit and spent hours serving as my coach and hand-holder. He's fantastic.

At this point I'm trying to reinsert all sorts of graphics that went missing during the transfer and fuddling with fonts and plugins. One problem with which I'm wrestling involves an apparent change in the most recent version of the Atahualpa theme, which (so far as I can figure out) makes it impossible to display the start of our executive director's blog under a static intro post on the home page. Anyone know how to do that?

I'm also trying to figure out how to move video posts to the right hand widget sidebar — and so far no luck. I may have to bother Mr. Govindji again. He's a saint among men.

You used the iframe embed code and the plugin is designed to have object code I have added first two videos and I leave rest foe you to add.
You will need to tick Use old embed code [?] to get the object code from youtube

Now, that one I would never have figured out! Thank you so much, GP! Good things are coming your way.

    Govindji,
Do you know how to get the very small thumbnail views of the first video frame to appear to the left of the listed videos? I can't see how to do it. Also, are the thin purple lines inside the videobox (to the left of the placeholding camera icons) supposed to be there — an intrinsic part of the design? Can't tell.

Never let a writer rebuild a blog. It just means more work for the rest of the world. . . .

The code is using generic as you have not set them up in youtube you need to log in youtube and set the image you want to show on each video

As the newer posts have now strayed from the original topic/question, I'm now closing this one.
