Support » Fixing WordPress » Accidentall entered blog feed in to itunes feed submission instead of podcast

  • I am a first time podcast publisher using Blubrry PowerPress plug in to submit my audio podcast to iTunes. “Publishing a Podcast on iTunes” – as per the link you provided, I accidentally entered the url to my blog instead of the url going pointing directly to the podcast. I have received an email from itunes saying that my podcast has been submitted for review.

    1. Will it be denied because the feed is pointing to a non audio podcast location, or will they know to look for the podcast on my blog from looking at the RSS?

    2. If it is denied will I have to wait for another email saying so from itunes before I can resubmit the correct direct podcast feed? Or is their a way to cancel the submission and correct it before it is reviewed so I don’t have to waste time before it is published?

  • iTunes would not have even let you submit the feed if it didn’t have any media in it. Remember, blog posts with media still appear in your regular WordPress feed.

It is ideal to post a podcast only feed to iTunes since iTunes will never display blog posts in the feed. Just make sure you don’t “post” your episodes off the main feed (if you have WordPress setup for 10 items in your feed, then make sure every 10 posts is a podcast episode).

The main advantage to switching your feed to the podcast only feed is you will be able to maintain a larger list of your past episodes on iTunes. iTunes only displays the episodes present in your feed.

How can I make this switch? do I have to wait for the iTunes submission processes to go through first?

I would wait till iTunes approves your podcast. Then in PowerPress Settings > iTunes tab, configure the bottom option to set a “iTunes new feed URL”. in this box, you want to specify your podcast specific feed, (e.g. http://example.com/feed/podcast/). Then in 1-4 weeks iTunes will start pulling your podcast only feed. You will want to leave the “iTunes new feed URL” setting in place for at least 6 months. The 6 months is needed for the scenario where someone subscribed in iTunes to your podcast on January 3rd, 2011 (before you changed the feed URL) who then don’t load their iTunes App for 6 months, for example.

It’s important to know that the “iTunes new feed URL” setting updates not only the iTunes Store listing, but also all of the iTunes users who are subscribed to your podcast in their own copy of iTunes.

Triple check that your new iTunes URL is the correct one before you change this setting. If you put the wrong URL in there, it can permanently mess up your listing on iTunes.
