   I'm using a WordPress Multi-site install, and something has caused the fields for editing the Excerpt, Meta-fields, and basically everything below the main Post editing box to disappear for all but one user I designated with editor-level permissions. Even as the Network Administrator I can no longer see these fields.

   I've tried disabling my plug-ins one-by-one. No effect. Here are the plugins I'm using:

   - Akismet
   - emObA
   - No Comments On Pages
   - Restricted Site Access (activated on one site only)
   - ShareThis
   - Thumbnail For Excerpts
   - TinyMCE Advanced
   - TinyMCE Excerpt
   - User Role Editor

   I suspected it might have been the User Role Editor (which is a godsend for what we are doing) — so I disabled it and reinstalled WordPress 3.1.1 while it was disabled. No effect.

   Any advice on how to de-bug this further?

   A couple of other things. Other users have editor-level permissions, but cannot see these fields. Only this one user can.

   When I view source, it appears these other items are there, and I'm suspecting it has something to with a CSS class called hide-if-js.

   Any help would be appreciated.

   I just upgraded to WordPress 3.1.1 and the ability to edit "excerpt" and "custom fields" has disappeared. Not happy!

   Glad to hear I'm not the only one, abemishler. At the same time, I'm stymied in finding a solution.

   Are you running any of the same plugins that I'm running (see list above)?

   Akismet is the only plugin we have in common. I have tried deactivating it and that does not solve the problem.

   This problem renders WordPress essentially useless to me right now. My custom theme depends on info from "custom fields".

   It looks like it's there in the source, but I can't view/use it in the browser.

   I knew I wasn't upgrading for a reason. "3.0.1 is working for me ..." I tell myself. "Oh it'll be fine. They wouldn't release with any GLARING bugs" I reply. 5 clicks later, and I'm filled with regret.

   Upgraded to 3.2-bleeding. Doesn't work either. Guess I'll go the other way and try a downgrade.

   Downgraded to 3.0.5. Same thing! What in the world is going on?

   Wiped out the wp database and restored from 3.0.1 db backup. Reverted to 3.0.1. Things work again, and there I will stay. Need to do some testing before I jump again. Am using 3.0.5 successfully on another site, but am satisfied that it works here for now.

    Wow. Thanks for the blow-by-blow. Sounds like there's a little piece of code difference inserted in the 3.1.1 database. For all we know it was cleared up in 3.2, but your rollbacks indicate that once the bit was set, it didn't go away.

    Is your installation multi-site? My guess is it only affects multi-site users (who are a much smaller proportion of the whole). Otherwise, there would be a huge outpouring of complaint.

    The interesting thing is that I have one user with editor privileges who is still able to see the meta and excerpt fields. I'm going to try comparing their stored DB code against the other editors and see if there's a simple tweak that can be made.

    Like you, I can see the missing fields in View Source, which makes me feel it's likely a bug in the js / no-js display mechanism, which is somehow linked to users... ... ... ?

    If any WP team members are monitoring this thread, we'd love to hear from you... even if you don't have an answer to our problem.

    Abemishler —

    I found the problem and the solution. It's not a bug in WordPress at all. As of version 3.1 they've enhanced the ability to control what appears via screen option (the tab at the top right of the page of the post your editing).

    There's an option, which is turned off by default, to display Custom Fields...

    Arrrggh(!), but aaaaaah . . .

    hey - thanks for the posting... i chased my tail on this for an hour.

    but thanks to you guys, i didn't have to forgo a nights sleep!
