Is it possible to run two wordpress sites on one domain? For example...
http://www.x.com has my main site, but http://www.x.com/new brings me to the second site?
If not, then is it at least possible to have certain pages of your site be using a different theme?

So I installed multi-site, and decided to go back, but now all my links are broken - easy fix?
Possibly. First, re-save your permalinks. Second, make sure you reverted ALL the changes (like the .htaccess stuff too).
Also, did you make a backup before you started playing around? :)
