[resolved] A post from a total newbie/idiot... (6 posts)

    Okay, so...

I'll go ahead and be perfectly honest up front - I really don't know what I'm doing.

In light of this, I really don't expect anyone to explain in great detail the answers to my questions (althought that would be AWESOME...), but I would still assuredly wish that someone might point me in the right direction. That having been said, on with the idiocy...

Okay, so I would very much like (translation: need to) to create a website that is based off of the Kubrick template. After doing some searching, i found that WordPress seems to be the obvious choice for using said theme as well as for creating a blog-ish site.

I've pretty much figured out that I'm going to make my little G5 into my own little web server (and figured out how to do that), i while i do have SOME knowledge of web-based languages (i.e., HTML, PHP), I'm not particuarly adept.

So, i suppose what I'm asking is 1.) how does one really go about making said site appear on the web under my DN (I know, that sounds like a stupid question...but again, I'm an idiot) 2.) how best would I be able to incorporate, say, pictures into that site, and (basically, a site like this: http://the.taoofmac.com/space/ is particuarly close to what I would like...yeah, that's probably setting my sights a little high, but it's what i'm looking for nonetheless) 3.) that website said that it suports imputing Blogger information, but that doesn't mean that I can just import WordPress themes and information without having to go through any of this other stuff, does it?

Okay, so once again - I'm prepared for flames. I really don't have anywhere else to turn, however, so i figured I might as well give it a shot.

Thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to help me, or just point me to a link that goes somewhere where i can find help.

    Thanks again!

Why are you wanting to self-host ?
It would seem to be making your learning curve that much steeper.

I'm self-hosting a bbpress forum and tried with WordPress as well. I found this page very useful:
    http://girtby.net/offerings/wordpress-osx-local-mirror
it explain how to set up a Local Mirror of your WordPress Blog on MacOS X, but everything applies to set a new one up (except copying the blog, of course!)

Also have a look at http://www.no-ip.com.

Wow, thanks everyone so far! These are already tremendously helpful!

Oh and to answer podz's question, the reason I'm choosing to self-host isn't a concrete decision by any means (it's very subject to change...). That having been said, i still like the control I get by doing so.

however, if it all turns out to be extrememly difficult, i suppose I wouldn't mind trying the other way at all. :)

    thanks again!
