A point in the right direction

Hi

I was hoping someone could be kind enough to give me a quick hand. I have read through a good few tutorials on this and some of them say different things so I’m a bit confused.

I have my site set up with a template i downloaded, but i want to keep this template and use it for word press. I have split it up a few times in different ways to try and convert it. Mostly it comes up , but the layout is messed up and there are things missing. I cant seam to work it out. The other times it wont show up at all in the theme chooser so i must have done it completely wrong that time.

I am not sure if the template it self is XHTML or just HTML…I thought it was HTML, does it make a difference?

So if some one could take a look or something I’d be very grateful!
