Changing the Number of Posts on Main Page

    I would like to change my site so that only the most recent post shows up on the main page, but the archive pages show all of the posts for that month. When I change the maximum number of posts to “1” in the Option menu, only one post at a time shows up in the archives pages. Does anyone know of a way to change one, but not the other? Thanks.
