[Plugin: Bad Behavior] 400 Error on home page only – site broken, not a a proxy,privacy software iss

    Running Bad Behavior v.2.2.11 on the latest version of WordPress at WPEngine.com

    This morning, all was well. Went to the site this afternoon, and got this error on the home page:

    ERROR 400
    We’re sorry, but we could not fulfill your request for / on this server.
    An invalid request was received. This may be caused by a malfunctioning proxy server. Bypass the proxy server and connect directly, or contact your proxy server administrator.
    Your technical support key is: b0c3-ed14-41fe-ed15
    You can use this key to fix this problem yourself.
    If you are unable to fix the problem yourself, please contact xxx at xxx.xxx and be sure to provide the technical support key shown above.

    If I follow the link, I get this message:

    Technical Support
    An invalid request was received from your browser. This may be caused by a malfunctioning proxy server or browser privacy software.
    To resolve this problem, try bypassing the proxy server and connecting directly, disabling the browser privacy software, or using a different web browser.
    If you are using a work computer and are unable to make these changes yourself, contact your network administrator for assistance.

    I get this message on the home page only (all other pages display if one goes directly to them).

    I get this error

    • across multiple browers
    • across multiple operating systems
    • across multiple computers
    • across multiple ISPs

    so, it is obviously NOT a localized problem “caused by a malfunctioning proxy server or browser privacy software.”

    I use neither a proxy server nor browser privacy software.

    I have tried disabling and even removing the plugin. Even with the plugin removed, the error persists.

    This is my business site and I need it back up yesterday. I am about to just rebuild the site if I cannot get any help. Please let em know something ASAP.

    You use WP Engine, which has its own internal reverse proxy servers. From the investigation I’ve been able to do, this is being caused by WP Engine themselves. You should contact them for further support.

    From the only report I’ve received, this seems to happen only when strict mode is enabled, so I don’t recommend enabling strict mode at WP Engine until they have fixed the issue.

    Hello! @WPEtopher here; I’m one of the L3 technicians working on this case (Ticket #69794).

    This is due to the caching on our servers; if the plugin is disabled and removed, you should clear the WP Engine caches by following this documentation:
    – http://support.wpengine.com/cache/

    As for the reverse proxy configuration: The only time I’m aware of that we enter into a reverse-proxy situation is when moving a site from one server to another; in that case, we will set up the server to relay http requests to the “new” server (this is to ensure no downtime while the site owner updates their DNS records).

    Additionally, are you utilizing CloudFlare? This may also be detected as a reverse proxy.
