I am not liking the idea that links have been taken out of the WordPress core in 3.5. Yes, I know, there is the Link Manager WordPress Plugin that was created as a replacement. But it seems like that is going backwards instead of forward.

Sure, “Blogrolls” are out and custom menus are “in”, but for a lot of us, we like to display the sites we frequent.

It seems that if a user didn’t want to display a blogroll, they simply wouldn’t bother. But why take away something just because some people won’t use it?

    Just an observation.

Who is we… in the grand scheme of all many millions of Wp users?

My guess here, is that the move is being made, as many changes are, to simplify the backend – especially for newer users. And really, the menus do the exact same thing as the link manager would. So why not eliminate redundancy?

I’m not saying right, wrong, or indifferent here really – I’ve always used code to hide the links manager myself. Every version of WP makes changes that some people love, and some people hate. I foresee this being one of those cases – but one which I doubt will be reversed.

I’m guessing it is still a substantial number — but then that would only be a subjective guess.

Sure, menus might be a replacement for new users going forward, but for a lot of us who have had WP sites operating for the better part of a decade, this makes for more work in the short term.

Perhaps I missed the memo where this was actually going to happen. I was blindsided by it myself, as I am sure that many people will be blindsided when they upgrade to 3.5 and discover that a large part of their sidebar has disappeared, and even the access to the links on their back end has been taken away.

You are probably right, that in the long run this is a better way to go. I guess my main argument here is not having enough of a word before hand.

I can totally understand that opinion…. to be able to see the direction where WordPress is headed often takes following along in trac, or on the make site (linked up in the menus now), in chats, etc.

It can be a bit difficult keeping up and getting notice – these things are announced as the decisions are made – usually well before the next version ever hits beta – but you do have to kind of dig a bit to keep up. I try to keep up in the make/core section, but often get surprises myself!

I do imagine this will be one of those changes we hear a good deal about once folks start upgrading

I think that this is better like this… The Link Manager plugin works just fine untill now with the 3.5 version. And it is having a big advantage: it can be deactivated for the users and/or websites where it is not needed.

This won’t happen, the implementation is smart enough to figure out if your website is already using links. If you install a new blank WP 3.5 site, the links won’t be there, but if you upgrade from an earlier version and have been using links, the Link Manager plugin will be automatically installed and activated.

Btw, here is where the technical discussion happens:
    http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/21307

And here is the plugin for 3.5:
    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/link-manager/

Hi, for my the simple solution was to create a dedicated menu [LINKS] and within him I put Custom Links.

Now very simple you can list the menu using [Custom menu] widget.

    simple.

obs. default on install the Link target attribute are not listed (to open the external link in new page) and you must open [screen options] and activate the attribute.

    that’s all
