Leaving Old html pages for SEO

    I have a client who has a WordPress site installed “over” a static site that appears to have been built in Front Page. The old site with dozens and dozens of pages about their products was left intact, and redirects were placed in the .htaccess file. I have slowing begun migrating some of the old pages into WP, but it is going to take a while. It was felt these pages should be left since so many old pages were indexed.

    Meanwhile, I noticed that many of my new WP webpages were not being indexed by Google. I am wondering if spiders are confused with all these old html pages on the site. Should I delete them all?

    Here is the first part of of the .htaccess file and I don’t really understand the coding.

    IndexIgnore .htaccess */.??* *~ *# */HEADER* */README* */_vti*

    If you have a redirect from an old page to a new page, I would wait to delete the old one until you know for sure that the new one has been indexed.

    Once the redirect is in place you should be ok to delete the old one, but I would keep the old one in place until the new one is indexed, in case you have to revert back to them particularly if you are having issues with indexing the new pages.
