My WordPress site was hacked so I need to restore my back up. I’m new to this and find your FAQ is not detailed enough for me. The SQL database is a single folder that I can move and save elsewhere simply. The Filesystem folder, however, contains dozens of files and I can’t see how to move them without doing so individually, which would take hours. What’s the best way of doing this? Thanks.

See if it makes sense to you. Let me know if you have any questions still afterwards.

    Hello Jason

Sorry to say that try as I might, I cannot follow this. Backing up my database was easy. I didn’t need to use it but Jupiter Jim’s video shows just how simple it is. He mentions in the video that he plans to create another video showing how to restore the database. Unfortunately he hasn’t yet released this.

Do you have a ‘Noddy’s guide’ to restoring a database? Are there any other Jupiter Jims out there who have produced a clear set of instructions for this? I really need a nice step by step guide that I can follow from start to finish. In the meantime, my site has been down for over a week and this is a key part of my business!

Most WordPress users are not highly techy, which is why we choose WordPress over something more complicated. The restore process seems to be far from straight forward. I appreciate that your company provides it as a free plug in but I’d rather pay a few quid for something I can actually use. Do you have people on hand who can do the restore for me for a reasonable fee?

Many thanks for your time and help Jason. I hope to hear from you soon.

    Thanks, Jo

    Hi GoJo,

The plugin intention is to provide you with what you need if you have any issues with your website. We had intended at the start that if a big serious problem happens and a full restore is needed, users would be able to seek help from people with a little technical knowledge with getting the bits restored.

We have been planning for a while now to add automated recovery to the plugin, so you can install it to a blank WordPress and recover a backup. But such a process is not simple and with the plugin writing data to the entire WordPress installation and database instead of just reading data it means no room for error. This process also needs to be straight forward and just work – if it goes wrong even slightly we end up at square one needing a technical person to assist.

There are quite a few guides to restoring backups of the database around. There is one from WordPress here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup
The complication is our backup won’t overwrite so you’ll need to stay on the table list and click all the checkboxes and then click the red X to delete existing tables. We’re changing this in a future version so the backup will overwrite.

This seems to have some good instructions too:
    http://www.devshed.com/c/a/MySQL/Backup-and-Restore-a-MySQL-Database/1/

Just note the key bit at the bottom:
“You need to drop all of the database tables first (not the database itself). This is done by going to “Structure”, and then if you see the entire list of tables, scroll down and check “Check All”. Once all tables are selected, beside it you will see “With selected”, select “Drop”. Then click “Yes”. Once it is empty, execute Step3 to Step 6 again.

    Hello Jason

The main problem I have is understanding how to download and save all the files from the backup (the Filesystem folder). There are probably thousands of them within all the dozens of different folders, each requiring the individual insertion of the encryption key. My initial question at the start of this post is asking how I do this but that has not been answered – or if it has, I’ve missed it!

In desperation I have started to download each of the files individually but I can see this would take me a minimum of eight hours of solid work, possibly far more. If I can move all of the files onto my pc, perhaps I will have a fighting chance of restoring my backup. Could you please tell me how I do this?

    Thanks, Jo

    Hi GoJo,

Apologies. I must have got side-tracked getting the information for the first question and missed the second one.

When you click the blog name to view the backed up data, and you see “Database” and “Filesystem”, there should be a Generate Snapshot option underneath.

This will ask for a single encryption details and generate a ZIP file containing everything from the specified backup time. So is much much quicker.

We’re working on letting people do the same for specific folders but that won’t materialise for a while I’m afraid. For now one can just download everything from latest backup using the snapshot feature at the root.

Aha! I’ve successfully downloaded the snapshot so will now proceed with the restore. I’ll give you a shout if I need to. Thanks very much for your help and prompt response.

    Thanks, Jo
