Hello and thanks in advance for helping a novice WordPress user out.

My question is why my wordpress hosted blog- aybecker.wordpress.com , is set up more user-friendly than my purchased domain/hosted blog- oldtownofchicago.com . It was so easy to change the sidebar widgets and to upload a custom header on the wordpress site. I am not even given the option to change the header or the sidebar widgets on the hosted site. All it's says is theme editor then brings me to a bunch of CSS that I have no idea how to disect. What do I need to do to get the SAME setup my WordPress blog offers on my hosted server? I thought it was going to be the same thing and it isn't. I know that there is a fix and i lerked the forums for 3-4 hours today/tonight but I can't even see even more. Thanks again, Alex

It's assumed, despite the 10000's of posts here that prove otherwise, that those people that set up wordpress blogs on their own domains have a basic knowledge of Internet technologies, be it CSS, PHP, HTML, how to use an ftp client, etc..

That assumption is not much to ask either.

Sites like wordpress.com, blogger, etc.. exist and flourish because there are people out there that dont want to learn CSS, and arent so stubborn that they insist on having every CSS related question answered by someone else (see: here) while not using wordprss.com

In other words, they insist on not learning, and, instead, beleagur others into doing the things they ought to be busy learning how to do themselves.

Fortunately, the WordPress devs have taken a bit of a high road on this, refusing to dumb down the software anymore than it already is, saving those of us that actually care about having learned how to maintain a WordPress blog quite well from wallowing with the likes of "aoler bloggers".

    Hope that helps!
