    Folks,
I was updating my site early this evening when suddenly the appearance changed and the content & side bar suddenly was pushed over leaving 1/3 (+/-) of the page blank. (See http://www.howardparsons.info) Obviously I have no idea as to what happened.
    Here’s what I’ve tried:

    1. Deactivated the last plug-ins installed
    2. Uploaded a fresh copy of the theme
    3. Switched to the Twenty-Twelve them
    4. Switched back to the original theme

With regard to # 3, a few possible oddities.

    1. Everthing looks normal – at least for that theme but naturally, there are no widgets configured
    2. I tried the “Live Preview” on both copies of the original theme and one of them showed everything formatted as is should be. I activated that theme but when I tried looking at a page in the regular way, there was no difference between that & the original appearance problem.

At this point in time, I can only think of a few possible routes:

    • Re-install WordPress
    • Dump the database & reload the last good copy
    • Play musical widgets

I anyone can suggest which I should do first, suggest a 4th possible route to recovery, or tell me that there’s a quick fix for this, I would be greatly appreciative of you your advice & support.

  • Your theme was generated using Artisteer?

That is correct. I’ve not had a bit of trouble with the theme until now.

You should probably post on their forums — as those themes are not really able to be supported here. You could also start by clearing up a bunch of mark-up errors on the page — these can come from the theme code and/or content that you’ve entered (and usually missed a closing tag or have an extraneous tag someplace):

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fhowardparsons.info%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

Fixing those might fix the layout issues. Beyond that, you’d probably need to work with the CSS — Firebug is a great tool for that.

    I really doubt that it’s a problem w/ the theme. Here’s why:

    1. This theme has been in use without any problems since late March of 2012
    2. I uploaded the original CSS from that time. No joy.
    3. I installed the latest release of Artisteer 3.1, re-exported the theme under a new name and installed it on the site. No joy.
    4. Whatever coding errors there may be on the page you saw last night, this problem is across the board on EVERY page & post.
    5. The theme & website worked perfectly yesterday up until around 5:00 PM, EDT

Sounds very frustrating. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help, but I really don’t have any experience with Artisteer themes and how they are coded. I did look at your site again and you might try adding a width to the main column in the CSS — which seems to work when tested using Firebug. But whether it would work site-wide on all pages, I can’t tell for sure. Good luck with it.

I thought that the Jetpack Update that was released 20 min. ago might fix things as I installed the previous one yesterday & activated the new Mobile module but No Joy. The installation & activation yesterday was mid-morning & everything went swimmingly until around 5 as previously mentioned.

De-activating the mobile didn’t work either

    Line 411 has

    411.</span></li><li class="saw_msg"><span class="saw_content"><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Coming Soon! Emm Cole, author of <strong>Merminia</strong><em>, will pay us a visit as a guest blogger. Stay Tuned!</p>

on the validator – an open em tag not closed can hose up various things…. I’m not sure were in your content that is – or if it’s the problem, but its one problem

The severity of the issue that would cause would depend entirely on your theme code, how the em is defined in css, etc …. it can be a nothing, or really hose a site

    WPyogi,
Do you happen to remember where in the CSS you made that change? I’d like to give it a try & it’s been loooong time since I crawled around in a style-sheet.

    Rev. Voodoo,
I took a look at the code you included & disabled the associated plug-in. Every thing looks fine now. One of the things I did late yesterday was to add a new announcement to that particular widget. Nothing fancy & the plug-in has been working for months.

I’ll be re-activating the plug-in & doing a bit of experimentation for the next 30 min. or so. I’ll post again when the problem w/ the plug-in is either resolved or permanently disabled.

    Rev. Voodoo et al.,

I’ve deleted the plug-in & replaced it w/ a new one that isn’t quite as nice but serves the purpose.

The code sample just happened to be displaying an announcement that had been deleted yesterday afternoon. I don’t know if adding & saving it caused the problem or deleting the announcement did it. One way or another, I was not up for crawling around to find the announcement in the database or elsewhere so killing the plug-in was the best option.

Thanks to Rev. Voodoo & WPyogi for taking a look at this & guiding me to the cause of the problem.
