permalinks plunge – access errors

Hi all, I recently upgraded to wp 2.x. Now I see the need to start using permalinks for my pages.

My first attempt at enabling them results in 403s for all pages including the dashboard. The only solution is to delete the .htaccess file from my /blog folder.

What could be wrong? I just want to try some of the default permalinks first.
