   I purchased a domain name and hosting space with Dotster to create a blog for my husband. I am new to blogs, but have made web pages before and am comfortable hand coding html and some css, but not server-side scripts etc. My husband is not techy at all, so I signed up for the Windows server since it came with SiteBuilder and said it could be used to create & manage a blog easily - bleck, it was awful - no control over design at all!

   Plan B - I found Wordpress and confirmed that my server had the required PHP & MySQL. I know a Linux server would be preferred, but thought I'd go ahead and see if I could get things going on the Windows server before going through the trouble of cancelling that hosting account.

   I was able to set up a database & install the program. I had a problem at one point because the database is not at localhost. I fixed that in the wp-config.php and then everything worked fine in the WordPress interface.....except, I can't see the page and I can't figure out why it's not loading. I've deleted the old index.html file and set the webspace default settings to check for index.php and still nothing.

   Is it the fact that it's a windows server?
   Is it that the database location is not localhost?

   The address is http://www.crotchetyoldbastard.com (I picked that for my husband - jokingly of course - sort of :-)

   Shouldn't be the database not being localhost as long as you gave it what your host requires.... and if that were it, you'd get the dreaded "database error" message.

   Windows server *might* be a problem, though I do know of people running wp on them.

   Is the wp install in a subfolder?

   [Had to laugh.... my dad worked at the Nevada Test Site for more years than anyone can believe; he was known to all and sundry as "that crochety old bastard in Area * (* = pick any given area he worked in over the years: 9 was the last one before he retired....)]

   I copied all of the files to my root folder. The wp install was in the wp-admin folder.

   (aside from being crotchety - your dad must be scary smart)

   So did you go into the wp-admin/options/ screen before you moved the files to root, and change the siteurl and home values?

   If not, do you have phpmyadmin access?

   [Daddy died 5 years ago at 84. Yes, he was a very smart man.... he adjusted from the WWII mentality he came home with in 1946, with little education, through all the changes over the years including getting an advanced degree on his own, and remained alert and vital and "together" right up until Parkinsons got to where it could not be denied. He loved what he did at the Site, and was generally respected - the "epithet" was usually bestowed with love....]

   Okay - I'm still trying to figure out the first part of your response about going to the options screen before moving files. I followed the directions online as closely as possible.

   I'm not very familiar with databases and am still getting used to the control panel at dotster, so I took a screen capture of the database controls that I could get to - you can see it at http://www.zillaweb.com. Maybe you can see if that tells you anything? It looks like I have phpmyadmin access - I just don't know what to do with it :-)

   If your original install was in a subfolder, the siteurl and home links in the options screen would be like http://www.crotchetyoldbastard.com/wordpress

   So if you were moving the blog to the root, your siteurl and home links should have been changed to http://www.crotchetyoldbastard.com

   I never moved the blog. I took all of the original wordpress files and copied them all into my root folder before installing. The actual install file is in the admin folder and is accessed for the first time by going to yourdomainname.com/wp-admin which brings up the install.php and gives the password etc.

   The screen capture for the database screen is at http://www.zillaweb.com and I it didn't link above because it pulled in the period at the end of a sentence as a .com. - (haha - thought I was losing my mind when the link didn't work but I could type in the url and it did). It looks like Wordpress interacted with the database and populated it with some files, as far as I could tell.

   So if you go to http://www.crotchetyoldbastard.com/wp-admin can you log in as admin?

    Ok.

    Visit Presentation. Are you on the default theme? If not, please select it.

    Visit Plugins. Disable 'em all (if any).

    Visit Options -> Permalinks. Confirm it is at Default (or change back to Default) and Save.

    Any changes in viewing the blog?

    Ah.... got it.... (oh, missed that trailing period myself - silly things....)

    Well, hmmm. So the wp-admin section loads fine.... there were a lot of threads here last week or so about blank pages, did you run across any of those? If not, maybe do a quick search for some of them to see if there's anything in there that would help.... it was after 2.0.5 was released....

    I just checked all of those areas. I'm on the default theme and don't have any plugins that are activated and the permalinks are at the default - still no blog :-(

    Well.... one last thought before I head off to bed - reupload the files. All of them except wp-config.php. Just in case something important got corrupted....

    I'll try that in the morning - I think I'm toast for the night. Thanks for the help and thanks for sharing about your dad. He sounds like quite an extraordinary man. Let's hear it for all the C.O.B.'s of the world - they make it a far more interesting place :-)
