  • Hi,
It’s a known issue. We may modify sharethis code as per the Google page speed rules in future but, it’s not planned for an immediate release .
You can improve the speed to some extent though by modifying the sharethis code as explained here:
    http://support.sharethis.com/customer/portal/articles/475091-widget-load

    Sorry for the inconvenience .

    Confused….
If it’s a known problem, why are you not fixing it?

Also isn’t there a better way of adding that code to the head of a wordpress site than simply pasting it into the header from the link you gave?

    Hi,
You must have installed the sharethis plugin on your blog.
You can edit the sharethis script tags from here:
    Browse to: http://YOUR WORDPRESS BLOG/wp-admin/options-general.php?page=sharethis.php

Modify the existing code(as explained here:http://support.sharethis.com/customer/portal/articles/475091-widget-load)
from the section: [+] Click to modify other widget options.

    Thanks.

Now if we could just fix all the speed issues….

Read a lot about it today, it’s not that hard a fix and I’m sure your users will appreciate it as they will all get a slight bump in speed for google ratings. Right now your actually slowing all million sites down from their full potential.

    Hello Sir,
First of all we apologize for the negative experience you have had with our product.
Yes, we will look into it and will try to improve the speed.

    Hello,

Has this been dealt with yet do you know? I’m seeing the same warnings as medium priority in my page site speed and I really want to optimize it. I will look at the details provided here if there isn’t a fix yet.

    Cheers,
    Rob

No this has not been dealt with. Sharethis is still one of the worst plugins available when it comes to google speed tests. Considering that the plugin itself is a great concept, it is to bad that it is so poorly coded. Of course they will point to millions of ‘happy’ users, but I’d point to ‘millions’ of ignorant users who don’t know any better. (of course there are those that understand the problems but just deal with it in order to keep the functionality)

    Hello!

It’s not only bad performance in Google speed test.
I tested in pingdom.com and in for others…

The reply from the share this support is 6(!!!) month old. Really don’t understand, why a known problem can’t be fixed during 6 month…

I really like (!!!) this sharing tool, but being so slow is very poor.

    Hi,

It is a little disappointing because I think this plugin is really great. Clean, simple and pretty professional looking. Pity about the performance factors.

I added the bit of code they said to add above in the options for the plugin from the options page and it seemed to help in my performance tests.

Would be great if this was sorted in an update though.

Unfortunately I believe it is pretty obvious that they really could care less about the performance issues. I gave up on them and I bet you would come back to this same thread next year, and if they aren’t out of business, they will still have the same problem. Any REAL developers would see a problem like this and would have fixed it long ago.

    Hi Rob,

there’re several links offered above. Which one did you use?

In the options of “modify other widget options” I have this code:
    <script charset=”utf-8″ type=”text/javascript” src=”http://w.sharethis.com/button/buttons.js”></script><script type=”text/javascript”>stLight.options({publisher:”wp.59ae799f-ac5d-4ad4-b2df-5e469ceb3464″});</script>

Is this really the right place, because I’m not using a ShareThis widget.
    Sorry, I’m not a programming expert….

    Bye, Petra

    Hi Petra,

The way I did it was to go to Setting -> ShareThis from the control panel in your WordPress dashboard. Scroll down the page to where it says “Click to modify other widget options”. Then add the following to it:

    <script type=”text/javascript”>var __st_loadLate=true;</script>

I added that in between some of the other <script> tags.

How have you put the code in to your site? I have added it manually to mine, in the single.php file so I could put it exactly where I wanted it.

    Hope that helps,
    Rob

    Hi Rob,

thanks a lot for your efforts!!

So finally in my “Click to modify other widget options” it looks like this:

    <script charset=”utf-8″ type=”text/javascript” src=”http://w.sharethis.com/button/buttons.js”></script><script type=”text/javascript”>stLight.options({publisher:”wp.59ae799f-ac5d-4ad4-b2df-5e469ceb3464″});</script>

    <script type=”text/javascript”>var __st_loadLate=true;</script>

Is that correct like this?? I ask, because you wrote “I added that in between some of the other <script> tags.”
Unfortunately loading time is not changing. But perhaps I entered it wrong???

By the way, I test it here:
    http://webtool.1und1.de/analyze/?ladezeit

For the other code “charset…” it must have been there automatically. As I don’t know coding, it’s very probably that I did NOT put it by myself.
Do you know what this code is doing??? Is it good or shall I bettr remove it?

    Ciao,
    Petra

    RobReg

    (@robreg)

Hi, looks correct to me. I made sure that it was inline with the rest of the script tags. You could just add that charset in too but I don’t think it will make much different. I could be wrong, no harm in trying it.

I would look at the Google page insights tool and see what the critical path is and what suggestions it comes up with. Maybe that will help you with some suggestions on how to improve performance.

    Hi Rob,

yes, it is faster. But because I changed the plugin.

Reason: I was really disappointed that for that major problem of lost “likes” and other problems with sharing no feedback arrived.

No reply since days – many people report similar problems…

    Petra
